Cell phones: Necessity and Harm

Cell telephones have penetrated in lives of all people to the extent that nowadays it is hard to think about a person without a cell cellphone in the pocket. In addition to their real value and purpose, they have become the ability of entertainment, exchange of valuable information and joy. Unfortunately, collectively with their positive value, cell phones have continuously been the objects of criticism for being potentially dangerous for human health. This paper aims at discussing the cellphone phones and their role in life of the present day population.
History of creation
Cellular communication, as well as a mobile phone was once invented and implemented by an American, Martin Cooper. He worked at Motorola and made a landmark mobile call in 1973 in New York (Agar 12). In 1973, the first prototype of a portable mobile phone was released, titled Motorola DynaTAC. It is believed that this phone was used for the first call on April 3, 1973, Martin Cooper, phoned his competitor from AT & T, Joel Engel (Agar 13). DynaTAC weighed about 1.15 kg was 22.5 × 12.5 × 3.75 cm in size. Until 1983, 5 prototypes of DynaTAC were created. The beginning was laid and the development in this direction still continues. The market offers several models of this cell phone (Agar 14). A year after the launch of Ameritech Mobile, the first commercial mobile phone company in the United States, the subscriber base of the operator grew to 12,000 subscribers (Fischer 24). For comparison, today AT & T, the largest mobile phone operator in the US, serves 72.9 million regular customers. In the US, there are more than 262 million mobile users, accounting for 84% of the total population of the United States (Fischer 25). At the end of last year, there were more than 3.3 billion mobile phone users in the world. And by the end of 2008 this figure increased to 4 billion people. In 2007, 1.15 billion cell phones were sold worldwide, and in 2008 sales reached 1.22 billion (Fischer 28). Modern cell phones are presented in different types and configurations in the market and are able to serve millions of users, taking in account tastes and preferences of each user as well aim of the use. This modern device is actively used by millions of people, helping to save on mobile communications, GSM- Gateway (Jagoda and M. de Villepis 35). Companies that care about budget savings are successfully using GSM-gateways, which allow using several SIM-cards of different operators in one device. In addition, this invention has initiated the development of many additional amenities for people and businesses. These amenities include Call-center, CDMA communication, mobile Internet and many others.The progress does not stand still and modern cell phones have been adapted to the needs and requirements of users of all ages and professions. Thus, modern devices are equipped with a wide range of applications, able to provide users with all possible entertainments. People are free to choose mobile phones for different purposes and this feature of modern device is very helpful for representatives of different professions. Unlike the first cell phone, Motorola DynaTAC, which was equipped with only one function, modern cell phones have a wide range of options, providing users with the huge possibilities and options for everything: business, education, sport, shopping and hobbies. Therefore, Martin Cooper, as an inventor of the first mobile phone, is a great person in the history of inventions and science. He managed to change the world of communication forever, giving the ancestors good ground for improvement and future inventions.Usefulness or harm?Although, the invention of mobile phone is associated with the important step, made in the sphere of technology and science, its usefulness is placed in doubt. It is related with the numerous reports and facts, stating that the use of mobile phones is related with the emission of harmful waves, which negatively affect brain and internal organs of the person. Despite these facts sound convincing, the usefulness and convenience of cell phones in everyday life, is hard to deny. They are irreplaceable for businesses and life.Dr. Martin Cooper created his first cell device with the only aim: make communication process faster and more convenient. He could not imagine that his invention would become a revolution in the sphere of technologies and could serve millions of people in the years to come. People should be undoubtedly grateful to the great inventor for the opportunity to freely communicate with each other regardless the distances and countries, where they live. Invention of mobile phone has changed the flow of history of creation of mobile devices and created the basis for future improvements. It has obviously changed the quality of life and amended life of each user, making it more convenient, interesting and filled with new opportunities and inventions.
