About Prison Reforms in Canada

In Canada, there has been an increase in the number of juvenile offenders who have committed violent crimes, robberies, and murders on a regular basis (Desroches, 2002). A sizable portion of criminals are in their middle years. Even while crime rates have dropped, the growing prison population might cause problems for the facilities' administration (Roberts, 2008). The following are the actions I would do if I were named minister of public safety in order to improve prisons and rehab inmates.
I would start by making sure that the prisoners had access to educational resources. Statistics show that most of them are eighth-grade students (Winterdyk, 2008). Education is an essential tool, as far as the growth of country and self is concerned. Therefore, I would ensure that the prisoners receive education as well as technical training to make them relevant citizens in Canada (Roth, 2006). Statistics also show that majority of the prisoners are either abuse or sexual victims. Therefore, the process of rehabilitation would include counseling services to reduce the post-trauma effects.

In reforming the prisons, first, I would ensure that the old age prisoners are separated from the rest since the generational mix cannot fit. The older prisoners might require specialized medical attention, due to the deteriorating health conditions. As part of the reforms, I would ensure that there are more facilities in the prison, which will go handy with the public health policy in Canada (Miller, 2013). The increased facilities decrease decongestion, as well as ensures that the prison runs efficiently. Additionally, the health facilities in the prisons would be enhanced to cater for the individual cases of prisoners with HIV and hepatitis, as well as the counseling services.
