“Beasts of the southern world” was not primarily made by and for the white people

Analysis of "Beasts of the Southern World"

"Beasts of the Southern World" was not created exclusively about and by white people, and it does not represent a situation in which white people are watching a film about the poorest of the poor black people and trying to save them, rather than defending them or feeling sorry for them.

The Diversity in "Beasts of the Southern World"

Furthermore, it should not depict a situation in which white viewers do not comprehend the true truth of what the black characters in the film are seeing. The citizens who dwell in the bathtub tend to be both white and black. The main characters in the drama series, Wink and his daughter Hushpuppy, are both black, but they have white neighbors. Therefore, the problems that face the residents of the isolated bayous of Louisiana in the river delta befall both the whites and the blacks.

An Isolated Way of Life

The movie is about an isolated people who live in disconnection with the rest of the world, and any form of inclusion with other people is not welcome. The bathtub that they live in is an indication of the different way of life the residents of the area live. The place where they live is delicate and subject to cause harm to their lives since the levee shielding them from the flood waters of the ocean are vulnerable to let water flood the living area. There is an imminent storm that was about to hit the residents of the bathtub, and therefore, their life is already in a mess. The movie presents a situation where the community of the area was already living in turmoil before the onset of the storm and the emergence of the beasts.

A Glimpse into an Isolated Group

Through the lenses of the unknown beasts, the audience is introduced to an isolated group of humans who are struggling with instincts and emotions. Wink is optimistic about the future of his life and that of his daughter who seems not to value human connection and the importance of emotions. Notably, just like any other parent would do, he prepares her daughter to embrace the harsh world, and despite his hot-tempered character and his ailing body, he is presented as a loving father. Mink took her daughter to a school where she met Mrs. Bathsheba who teaches them about nature and the beasts from the melting ice. However, there is an apparent rift between Hushpuppy and her father since at one time, and she was forced to feed herself when her father was away. Therefore, the family relationships of the characters in the film were already in jeopardy before the onset of the storms. At one point, Hushpuppy was slapped by her father after a heated debate, and she retaliated by punching him in the chest until he collapsed. A world where children are physically fighting with their parents presents poor parenting and a state of chaos in the family. The mother of the little girl, Hushpuppy, left her family and went to work as a prostitute in a nearby pub in a ship. Therefore, the filmmaker illustrates a community that is already in chaos and thus, presenting an atmosphere of change. The critical shift in the lifestyle of the people was unstoppable as depicted by the storms that engulf the region. The drifting of the frozen aurochs also illustrates the turmoil that already exists in the lives of the people. The levee could no longer bar them from the imminent death threats, and they are forced to protect themselves from the outside world. However, the forces of nature overpowered them, and their property was destroyed, and some people lost their lives. Therefore, analyzing the film from racism does not apply since both the whites and the blacks are equally affected by the flooding.

The Impact of the Storm and the Change

Most of the residents of the bathtub flee from the imminent storm, but Wink and his daughter try to barricade the storm in vain. The lives of the residents are no longer the same after the storm was no longer the same as the saline waters from the ocean has contaminated their freshwater sources. Bathtub community can no longer live in an isolated society any longer as they are forced by circumstance to run for the safety of their lives. The filmmaker does not feel sorry for the residents of the area since it was their choice to live in the apparent dangerous area and any effort by the government assist them was in vain. After the mandatory evacuation by the authorities, some of the residents of Bathtub escape to their homes since they did not want to embrace the change in their lives. The poor infrastructure and lack of timely medical services resulted in the death of Wink since the time he was receiving the proper medical attention it was too late.

A Fighting Spirit and the Collapse of Nature

The courage presented by Wink to destroy the levee to recede the waters and Hushpuppy confronting the aurochs is admirable. Therefore, not all was lost for the people since they possessed a fighting spirit for their lives. There was a strong connection between the people of Bathtub and nature. When the Wink's health started failing, the surroundings seemed to follow the same route. His illness marked the onset of a series of problems in the environment, and as his illness escalated, nature seemed to collapse, apparently affecting the lives of the people. Therefore, the frustration that the audience feels about the film is as a result of the volatile environment Bathtub people used to live in and their failure to embrace change and join the rest of the world.
