AUTO-ETHNOGRAPHY in Asian-Americans

There isn't an Asian American experience that lacks a perspective or even an identity—the majority of Asian Americans attending academic high schools certainly have a method of displaying it. In my situation, I'll rely on the perception that Asian pupils are intelligent in the classroom. Some Asian American students have shown good embracing in this scenario by fully embracing this philosophy via their accomplishment, whereas those who failed to attain this model minority success were condemned and struggled to integrate into this class. We, for example, have varied ideologies in understanding the matters on race and also racism. This is due to varied kinds of relationships that are between them and the non-Asians students.

Generally, in school, I was affected by the fact that I failed in sciences. This made other students look down at me and made fun of me. It was believed that all Asian American students were high achieving and performing model minorities in school. This aspect had a negative influence in my life whenever it came to sciences. This served as a wedge between the non-Asian students and the Asian students in school. The school categorized all as Asians regardless whether you are from Southeast or East Asia, Thus as a matter of fact erased the little significant differences that we had in school as Asians. It didn't matter which area you were from be it Korea, Chinese, Cambodia or Lao. Our identity only came from our judgment of the situations that we were in comparison to the whites, non-whites who were minorities and also other Asian American around us. Some of my colleagues accepted the label minority gladly while some had to live up to it, as for my case I was still critical to that aspect. At home, we are not that well off hence having trouble settling in school. The kinds of friends of friends that I have and are non-Asians always make a mockery of my marks in sciences.

Concept

There is the aspect of the race that comes in regards to this model. As individual interacts individuals are categorized into groups such as ethnicity and color. Although the term race is used in accordance with the biological factor is still a common word that is used to categorize individuals according to some certain visual attributes, accented language that is ethnically or racially distinct marker ( [email protected] , 1). The model minority myth is a stereotypic concept which is against the Asians-American race which lay claims that all the Asian-Americans are pretty highly educated persons and also are brought up from a very stable family structure. In addition to this, they also earn higher incomes as compared to any other minority group (Guo, 6). It was seen as the Asians living the American dream, they had their own good fortunes that were coming from an individual who was self-reliable and also a community that was self-sufficient fully. They did not benefit anywhere from the government welfare benefits or any non-civil rights activism. In simple terms, the Asian-Americans are seen through the Whiteman's lens simply because the whites are the dominant group of people that live in the United States. It is so because they have that power to place people of different color or different ethnic background into categories that are different. This aspect is quite misleading as this model has a harmful effect on the Asian community living in the United States. This model was assigned to the Asian communities by the whites as it is evident. This aspect is unable to bring out the complexity of matters that the Asians are experiencing throughout their lives while in America (Rothenberg, 249).

Analysis

In the concept of Minority model, there have been great factors that have been left out when it comes to matters of the Asian community living in America. Not all of our fare well in America. We face different challenges due to our races. As for me in school, I cannot associate freely with other individuals when it comes to matters of studies since I cannot live up to the standards that have been set up in school. We are deemed as great performers in terms of education. But due to my inability to pass the sciences subjects am seen as a failure in the society. My race has tied me down. In terms of social class, my background is not that well of as my parents have to struggle with bills, paying my schools fees and at the same time looking out for my siblings has been a challenge to them.

The lump sum grouping that has been done on the Asian-American population has caused to live in despair. There are major accuracies that are brought by the lump sum grouping. Not that to some extent some of the things that we experience may be different. At times it varies from one individual to another. For example, me, am poor at sciences but good at other subjects, some of my friends have a different experience from mine as they too have a different challenge through their experiences. At some point, we may be united by the race or color, but remember, each individual has their own experiences that they undergo through their life. In school am categorized as an Asian simply because of my race and color thus being expected to uphold the character traits assigned to that race. They do not care about the challenges that am undergoing in school. At the end of the day, I am still an Asian living in America having the American dream from the viewpoint of my classmate. The struggles that we undergo at home are hidden behind the smiles that I walk with daily to school. This aspect is misleading thus curbing the voice of airing out my grievances whenever am in trouble and need help be it from my teachers, classmates or friends. At some point, one may notice a couple of Asian individuals suffering in silence but cannot do anything to salvage the situation that they are in.

All in all the model of minority undermines one's race. At some point, people have to be judged not only from the majority perspective but from an individualistic aspect. This gives one a sense of identity and thus cuts across the racial line that has been created thus segregating individuals. This comes at a crucial point in life when matters have to be handled from a different point of view in order to aid those ailing in the shadows and mirrors of the common majority group.
