Asian Americans in the United States

As an Asian American, you are not alone.

There are millions of other Asian Americans in the United States. The term Asian American is a pan-ethnic category that has its roots in political organizing. Many respondents identify as Asian American because they think they share common political interests with other Asian Americans. Interestingly, respondents with a higher educational level were more likely to identify as Asian American. However, higher income did not significantly affect Asian American identity.

Chinese

Asian Americans are the people of Asian ancestry in the United States. Historically, the term "Asian" was used to refer to indigenous peoples of Asia, but since the 1950s, the term has been used to refer to people of Asian ancestry in the United States.

Japanese

The percentage of Japanese Americans in the United States has been increasing in recent decades. In 1970, the Japanese American population was less than a million, but now it is over three million. The increase is mild compared to that of other APA groups, but it has been steady over the past few decades. About two-thirds of Japanese Americans were born in the United States.

Korean

The National Korean American Service and Education Consortium is an organizing network of Korean and Asian Americans. It represents the unique needs of a diverse community. With impactful campaigns and multiracial alliances, NKSEC has become a leader and an icon in the Asian American community.

Vietnamese

The Vietnamese American community is comprised of two main ethnic groups. The first group, the Hoa, is a majority of Vietnamese Americans, and the other is a minority. However, many of these groups are mixed, and some Vietnamese Americans speak one or more different languages.

Filipino

Filipino Americans are dispersed throughout the nation, but most live in California or Hawaii. In the early 1900s, Filipino workers immigrated to the West Coast, where they formed communities and social networks. By 2000, seven of the ten largest Filipino populations lived in California. Most of these communities and social networks were formed through military ties.

Filipino-American

For too long, Filipino Americans have been cheering from the sidelines, watching others play the game. Even the children are content to watch the highlights on their smartphones. But the issue is not as simple as a sports analogy. It's a serious matter of self-love and solidarity with others.

Vietnamese-American

Asian-Americans of Vietnamese heritage face unique challenges, but the history of this community shows that there are positive outcomes. Many Vietnamese and Chinese immigrants immigrated to the United States and have established successful careers.

Korean-American

In the 1980s and 1990s, many Koreans began to migrate to the United States and open small businesses and churches, often in areas dominated by African Americans. As a result, tensions arose between Koreans and their customers. Dramatic scenes from Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" and the April 1992 riots in Los Angeles highlighted the issue. Later, a Korean-American elected to Congress, Jay Kim, served as a representative for Orange County, California. However, he lost his bid for reelection in a Republican primary.

Chinese-American

Chinese-Americans, the largest group of Asian Americans, have long maintained a successful public image. Yet, in spite of their success, Chinese Americans are often lumped in with other ethnic Asians. This "lumping" has contributed to a lack of awareness and understanding of Asian minorities in the U.S., and has led some ethnic Asian groups to form alliances to combat the negative stereotypes. Chinese Americans comprise about 20% of the overall Asian population, but have grown rapidly in the past decade.
