Analysis of Photography

Despite the fact that I had never seen Annie Leibovitz's work before, the two artists' work is outstanding. On his social media, I discovered Gregory Crewdson's work. Both artists' works are intriguing and feature many facets of photography. I like the two artists' work because it highlights key facets of photography, like culture and originality. Leibovitz, for instance, encounters individuals from many cultures who have lived in various locations throughout the world and shares their life experiences with the aid of the photographers in her works. The work done by Gregory Crewdson is even more impressive. His work is marked by creative photography that is mostly shooting covers for movies. He is professional in his work and always committed to shooting the best photos. The creativity employed by Gregory is top-notch and original. He is keen on details when shooting his photos. Technically Gregory works smartly with a team that is well drilled and knows how to perform their tasks to produce high quality and unique photographs that are eye-catching. His work seems to be more professional and emphasizes on every pit of the process to be done well.

At a personal level, the work done by Annie Leibovitz was impressive, although not as professionally as Crewdson’s. I find her work exciting and refreshing. The visits she makes to different cities meeting photographers and telling their stories gives one an opportunity to view photography from a different angle. The experiences of other photographers make one admire photography. The passion that they show when doing their work has also impressed me. The different confessions about their styles and the types of devices they like the most is a dare for one to try various photography devices. Technically, she seems not that much keen as the photos or videos are mostly for informal interviews and not professional.

The work of both photographers attaches me emotionally. The scenes that Crewdson mostly shoot are exciting and leave me wanting to see more of it. An example is his piece of photography that shows a number of people standing on what seems to be an old railway line in a deep forest while some of them are looking towards a burning house. For me this situation made me wish to know more of what was happening in the house, I asked myself questions such as who might be in the house, was anyone injured, why was the house burning, what was the cause of the fire, and many more questions. Being someone who loves nature, I was impressed by his scenes. The angles in which he shoots the photos provide a different view that is rare to find. Although a part of his work is scary and can leave one horrified, there is every reason to search for more of his work.

While Leibovitz’s work evokes the desire to visit those cities that she takes her photos of, meeting the different photographers, and ask more about their experiences, her shootings are staged mostly around different places in the world, which is exciting to anyone with the passion for traveling and interacting with people from different cultures. I find her job exciting and interactive as compared to the one who lives a dull life that does not involve interacting with people. The confessions of these photographers emotionally attach me to photography and help me understand what photography means to others, especially for those who are not doing it as a profession. The cultural interaction that is present during her photography is amazing and exciting. As a person who has the passion for photography, it has given me emotions wishing to tell my story someday.

I would identify myself with Gregory Crewdson more than Annie Leibovitz since I love being professional in my work and paying close attention to details that matter when taking a photo. Gregory Crewdson is more professional in his work and attentive to details. In my opinion, he wishes to see his creativity in his work while Leibovitz seems to be giving different views of the same object. Crewdson shoots trees, water, people, and a house in the same picture while Leibovitz takes a photo of a beach, tunnel, or a city using different views. Both artists bring out their objectives effectively. The work done by Leibovitz is full of different social and cultural values compared to the work done by Crewdson. It seems so because Leibovitz is moving from different cities interacting with different people who have diverse cultural backgrounds.

I would give my honest opinion to anyone who needed my help concerning the work of the two artists. I would advise or recommend someone to work for any of the two artists depending on his or her objectives when participating in photography work. The two artists provide two different objectives or aspects of photography. I would also take a bold move and confidently write a detailed post describing the work of the two artists.

Gregory’s work is more professional and seems to be rewarding businesswise, as they are sold to movie producers unlike the work of Annie. Crewdson works with a team of professional technicians and photographers who help him in shooting the pictures which is not the case with Leibovitz. Gregory works with a team of about 60 experts who are involved in the process of shooting a video or a photograph. Annie does not have a high number of experts that work with her. The reason behind this may be that her work may not be that professional, hence, requiring few experts to work with.

Gregory mostly involves actors in his photography because most of it is meant for the movies while Annie mostly deals with other photographers who are in different parts of the work. Gregory’s works involve shooting photos that are usually used as movies and TV shows covers while Annie’s work is a series of trips that involves meeting different photographers who give their experiences on photography and life in general. The two seem to be contrasting in terms of objectives of their photographic activities.

Annie has a collection of photos that she has come across with the various photographers that she uses as part of her program. She shows the pictures of other artists from different parts of the world as they share on how their journey in photography has been. Her works seem to lack originality as compared to the work of Gregory who has made his photos creatively.

The genre of the works of the photographers can perfectly be seen through their work as they have expressed their objectives using their photos. The aim of the photographers is to convey a point using the photos that they take to their viewers. The dominant theme of the two photographers is the aspect of culture. Leibovitz takes her time to interact with photographers from different cultures who give her their views on photography and their lifestyles. They explain how they grew up and their way of life. The dressing and musical instruments that are in the picture may express the cultural background of the photo. A good example is Haruyuki Kume who grew up in Tokyo. The musical instruments that were shown in some of the photos and the dressing were Japanese.

The work of Crewdson also had the aspect of culture as it showed the western way of life. As compared to Annie, Gregory used things such as pets that are common in the western world to express the culture of the people unlike in places such as Africa and Asia where pets are not valued as it is the case in western countries. His works seem to be focused on the American lifestyle or culture that can be drawn from the lifestyles shown in his photography. The case is different for the work presented by Leibovitz which is more of global experiences of different photographers working in different parts of the World.

The equipment used by the two photographers has a huge contrast in terms of the magnitude of the work that they can manage and the expense and quality that comes along with it. Gregory uses the latest sophisticated cameras and other equipment that are useful for lighting. He used to shoot photos at night, which may require light for the photo to be of high quality and has invested in sophisticated lighting such as Softboxes that help increase the lighting. Similarly, he has technology that helps him in post-shooting. The equipment makes his work easier and more professional.

Annie uses some of the best cameras on the market to shoot mainly during the day. However, the equipment she uses seems not be sophisticated compared to the one that Gregory uses during his photo shoots. Annie does not use Softboxes for lighting because she mainly takes her photos during the day. In average, the number of people that are involved in photo shooting in the case of Annie is lower as compared to those who participate in Gregory’s photo shooting sessions. Therefore, there is no need for Annie to use highly sophisticated equipment when her work seems to be simpler as compared to Gregory’s.

The final photography of the two differs because Gregory’s work looks more professional as compared to those taken by Annie. The quality that is produced by Gregory is more attractive and engaging as well. This may be attributed to the number of people who are involved and the equipment that is used in the photo shooting process. The photography of the two involves taking photos at the right angles and postures. Therefore, they take the time to alert the participants. However, Annie seems to be taking her photos quicker because her participants are usually few compared to Gregory who has to use even numbers to identify the participants in the photo shooting process.

The two photographers seemed to be compelled to be taking photos by their passion for photography. Gregory started his photography work with the minimal aim of making it a business venture. Gregory claims to have been shooting photos in the past for fun before being professional. The same case applies to Annie; she shows passion in her work of photography. This seems to be their common compelling reason for their active participation in photography.

Leibovitz seems to have been aiming at inspiring other upcoming photographers by her spirited visits to other photographers across the globe and telling their stories. She aims at giving inspiration and sharing their experiences. Crewdson seems to be involved in the business of making money out of the photographs that he shoots regularly. He sells the photographs he takes at high prices that enable him to pay the team that he has assembled and afforded the equipment that he uses. The photos taken by the two photographers represent different things to them. Annie seems to be more emotional and attached to the photos that she took as compared to Gregory whose main focus is making money out of the photos.
