An Interview Analysis

The two interviews emphasize the lifestyle contrasts between people with citizenship by birth and those with citizenship via immigration. Both parties immigrated to the country in an effort to pursue the American dream or better economic chances. They come across some difficulties on this mission that they did not expect. They outline the primary distinctions between life in the United States and their own countries.
In both cases, political difficulties that also impact their way of life cause families to immigrate to the United States. They both claim that their lives were happier and better up until their governments began to fail or bad political decisions started to emerge, which made living nearly intolerable. Moving to the USA presented challenges due to the different cultures. They also admit they had difficulties in communication as they did not understand English. The reception when they settled in the country was cordial and fair especially for the migrant who settled in a region with many Hispanics. However, the feeling of being the newest member of the region made them quite uncomfortable. The other interviewee also admits enjoying the life in the new country but struggles to adjust to the weather. It was quite unbearable to move out of the house for him. Life in America is not all a bed of roses as one might think or watch the movies. It’s a stereotype to think that everyone here has owns to a car, a good house and is filthy rich.

Most immigrants confess to having little understanding of the English language, and they hardly wish to communicate with the outside world there. Many of them opt to take tutorial classes, watch American movies and television to have a better understanding of the English language and bridge the language barrier to fit in. Since America is a do it yourself society, where people only think of themselves and doing their things to survive, most immigrants face the challenge of socializing. Many emigrants never took the time to learn English in their native countries until they found themselves in the country. Some still don’t see the need to learn the language in details unless the little they have to communicate effectively.

America accommodates people from all cultures. They include Africans, Asians, and Latin Americans. When one is an immigrant in America, there is a huge problem in trying to adapt, trying to understand and living amongst them. Being different in the USA may lead to differential legal treatment of citizens. The emigrants have always had a different perception of the cultures in the United States. They perceived the country to encompass a dominant white culture whereby one interviewee confessed to not know other cultures. This stereotype was mainly facilitated by what they observed in movies, to their amusement they encounter diversity and a culture of freedom and free interaction.

Most immigrants in America are considered and have always been considered Alien citizens. It involves the nullification of some rights of citizenship without formal revocation of citizenship status. In recent years, there was racial exclusion from acquiring citizenship for most non-European people on the grounds of backwardness and that they were deemed not fit for assimilation. As a result, children born in America by parents who are not citizens by birth had a problem acquiring citizenship although these laws were amended to fit African Americans born in America. Punishing a child because of their parent’s mistake is morally inhuman.

The most complex and harrowing situations experienced by emigrants are well documented by Jason De Leon. He critically examines the policy of emigration between the United States and Mexico using various anthropological methods. Through this undertaking, a clear and precise outlook of the consequences of border crossing is highlighted. De Leon in his research focuses on the situation on Sonoran desert which is considered a killing machine. The federal government utilizes this desert as a deterrence program ensuring illegal emigrants are pushed towards the desert instead of stopping them further endangering their lives. The book paints a clear and horror picture on readers mind about the non-ethicality that is used by the state to hinder illegal border crossing that has been hidden from the public light for years.

Following the attack of September 11, most immigrants of Asian origin, Muslims, and black Americans have always been linked to terrorism as the main suspects. Up to date, they have always been regarded as second-class citizens. (Gilbertson) Most white Americans are convinced that the Muslim Brotherhood in America is a terrorist group. Living in America as a Muslim can be a hopeless and desperate situation. Muslims are treated as outsiders and dangerous people. The government also perceives Muslims to be a potential threat to national security.

Conclusion

Most immigrants have certain stereotypes and beliefs about the United States that they come to realize the reality by being citizens. A vast of these stereotypes are either social, economic or political and are mostly viewed to be the opposite of the situations in their original homelands. Furthermore, most people are pushed to the United States as a result of unfavorable political systems while others are pulled by the search of the American dream.as they make their way to the USA they are faced with challenges either instigated by the government or natural incidents.
