Alan Turing was a British mathematician and computer scientist who is credited with creating the first modern digital computer. His work has been cited in many different areas of science, including cryptography and the development of artificial intelligence.
Alan was born in 1912 and grew up in London. He attended King’s College, Cambridge and studied mathematics and philosophy. He later became a professor of computing at Manchester University.

In the late 1940s, he worked on developing a new type of electronic computer in order to help with the war effort. His ideas were hampered by his lack of experience and the lack of support from the government, but he persevered. He managed to develop a program for the Manchester Mark 1 and even began to write software for Ferranti, who commissioned him to do this.
After the war, he was appointed as a Professor of Computing at Manchester University, where he started to plan the development of the first stored-programme computer. In 1950, he published a paper titled “Computing Machinery and Intelligence” which introduced the concept of a computer being able to think and reason like humans.
He was also a gay man, and had a sexual relationship with another male during his time at the University. This was against the law, and he was convicted of gross indecency for this act.
The court found him guilty, and he was given the choice to go to jail or undergo hormonal treatment. He chose to continue with his career, but this meant he had to undergo chemical castration and gynecomastia.
Alan’s personal life was very unconventional, and he had many eccentricities. He was a homosexual, and his conviction cost him his security clearance.
Despite these difficulties, Alan Turing was able to succeed in his studies and was very influential in the field of computing. He was able to make the connection between the computer and the brain, and was a crucial figure in the development of artificial intelligence.
He died by suicide in 1954, after a chemical accident. However, not all people believe that he committed suicide as there is evidence to suggest that he may have accidentally poisoned himself while experimenting with chemicals.
