Addressing Global Security Threats

Global security refers to efforts that ensure the mutual safety and security of nations and their citizens. It comprises diplomatic and military efforts implemented by governments and international organizations such as the United Nations to ensure global peace and security (Mann 2004). These safeguards ensure that governments do not invade other countries and are also intended to combat global terrorism threats.
The world is today confronted with a wide range of complicated security concerns, including violent extremism, wars between nations, organized crime, and weapons of mass destruction, among other threats (Mann 2004). These threats needs to be urgently acted upon to ensure the global safety and security to people and nations. There is need for every nation and international organizations to work together to ensure these global security threats are eliminated. This is not the case since each country has it specific agenda on the global security and some are seeking global dominance through their military (Mann 2004). This has created hostilities between nations and hindered a unified strategy to act on global security threats.

The leadership of the United States of America is very crucial in addressing global security threats the world is currently facing. United States has acted as leading role model in transformation of international systems since the World War II (Mann 2004). It has been leading the line to create a more safe, stale and prosperous world by collaborating and working with like-minded nations to create peace and security in the world.

United States leadership is crucial in addressing global security threats and concerns to it superiority in exercising general powers that combine ideological, military, economic and political power (Mann 2004). This gives United States advantage over other countries since most fail to combine all these power effectively. Other countries have failed to combine these powers together and have often relied on their military power gain global dominance. This has resulted to some them failing in their objective as due to lack political will, economic power and better ideologies to counter the United States.

Many countries across the globe have failed to enhance democracy and massively violates human rights. An example is Iraq where during Saddam Hussein regime there were massive violation of human rights on civilian population. The United State is committed to democracy and protection of human rights all over the globe (Mann 2004). Being a super power, the United State is the only country that has the military might and right to attack states that support terrorism or pose global threat with weapons of mass destruction.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, America took the position of maintaining international order since many states do not observe the world order and always threat to attack other (Mann 2004). Despite the United Nations and liberals advocating for multilateral interventions, United States has doubted the capacity of the United Nations to lead the world and maintain word order (Prestowitz 2003). This has seen the US adopt a unilateralism policy to intervene to global threats through it military force.

The United States huge economy has huge impact on other countries in the world. It has dominated the world economy since the word war II and leads in the global growth (Nye Jr 2010). It lead in hi-tech industries which in turn generate vast resources to military modernization and overseas operations. It dictates the economic policies while other countries and blocks such European Union react to these policies (Nye Jr 2010). This has enabled it lead globally in terms of economic and trade policies.

The dollar has remained to be the world reserve currency with the Wall Street trading around two-thirds of world’s stocks and shares value. The United States provide aid for development to poor countries hence subsidizing American Economy (Kagan 1998). This gives the America the financial freedom to fund it huge military budget each year without any economic strain that other countries experience when they spend big on their military. This ensures that is crucial in dealing with global threats.

United States being an economic and military powerhouse in the world is required to provide a leading role in dealing with security threats across the globe. With its vast military and military capabilities the US is leading it partners and allies in ensuring there is peace and stability in the world (Prestowitz 2003). It is on the frontline fighting terrorists and extremists groups across the world and restoring peace and stability in countries affected by these violent groups.

American military power is the best trained and equipped throughout the world. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, American military has not been rivalled. It has the largest military budget in the world. It enjoy the dominance in global deployment and fire-power and possesses military facilities and bases in over 132 countries across the globe (Kagan 1998). It possess the best military hardware such stealth fighter jets and bombers, missiles, ships and tanks as well technology-laden weapons. This ensure that it leads in addressing global security threats anywhere on the globe due to its massive offensive fire (Kagan 1998). This is more evidenced the United States commitment to fighting global terrorism and extremist groups. It has also enabled it to mount successful operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

United States dominates the United Nations resolutions, military interventions and sanctions. US used it veto powers to invade Iraq in 2003. It also relies on its allies in the Security Council to pass resolutions in the United Nation Security Council. America has offered more protection to other nations than United Nation has offered.

US has been on the leading line in fight against terrorism and extremist groups across the world. It has been involved in many counterterrorism operations in the world to flush out terrorist since the September 11 attack on the American soil (Record 2010). It has lead military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan to destroy terrorist networks such as Al-Qaeda that posed global threat to every nation (Record 2010). It lead it allies to these operations that have ensured that the threat of Al-Qaeda has been greatly reduced both in Afghanistan and globally.

USA and it allied countries lead the invasion of Afghanistan to flush out Al-Qaeda and Taliban leaders as well as the militants who threatened the globe through their terror acts (Zolo 2007). Through this invasion the Taliban government that was supporting and funding terrorist networks was toppled from power by the allied forces and democratic government setup in Afghanistan (Nye Jr 2017). This weakened the capacity of Taliban and Al-Qaeda to operate globally, reduced their threats and cut their main source of funding.

The US played a key in eliminating key leaders associated with Taliban and Al-Qaeda such as Osama Bin Laden who masterminded September 11 attack as well attacks in American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania (Nye Jr 2017). Osama Bin Laden was killed in 2010 by American Special Forces in his hind out in Islamabad Pakistan after American intelligent agencies identified his place (Bowden 2013). He had been on the run for almost ten years since he masterminded the attacks on the world trade center and the pentagon. His death continued to weaken the Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants in Afghanistan.

Through the US leadership in combating terrorism, many countries have enacted legal and administrative measures and polices to counter terrorism. This contributed to improved border and airline security and has empowered counterterrorism agencies with greater power to gather intelligence and arrest terrorism suspects (Zolo 2007). A good example of countries that followed the United States is Canada that enacted counter terrorism laws and invested over $289 million to counter terrorism activities.

The US leadership has been very strong in countering the global threat of the Islamic States militants whose origin is Syria and who carried attacks on civilians in several countries in Asia, Europe and Africa. US has contributed funding aid to assist countries fighting this group across the globe. It has contributed troops to fight in Syria and eliminate the threat of ISIS to globe (Stern 2016). It is also offering intelligent support to countries fighting ISIS such as Mali to enable their force to mount a successful campaign against the extremist group.

In the fight against the ISIS the US lead to the formation of the coalition with some of the Middle East countries such as Saudi Arabia who carrying out airstrikes on ISIS targets (Stern 2016). This US leadership on fighting ISIS in collaboration with other countries has reduced the capabilities of the extremist group from spreading and carrying attacks globally.

The US leading role in combat against terrorism has seen major powers such as Russia enter the arena of fighting global terrorism (Stern 2016). Russia has been carrying out airstrikes on ISIS targets since 2015 and has also sent it Special Forces to assist Syrian forces in combating the ISIS militants. With the US, coalition forces and Russia campaigns against the ISIS militants are being driven out Syria and gradually will gradually be defeated (Stern 2016). The US has offered crucial leadership to other countries in combating the threat of ISIS militant that threatened global peace and security. It was the US that first initiated a bombing campaign against the militants in Syria that so other countries join to fight ISIS.

The leadership is crucial in ensuring that the world is safe from the threat of weapons of mass destruction. The US has been leading the line in ensuring that biological, chemical and nuclear weapons do not fall into the hands of terrorist or other unpredictable dictators who could use them against their adversaries (Zolo 2007). It playing a key role in ensuring that only the 5 five countries that are allowed by the United Nations to have nuclear weapons reduces the sizes of their nuclear stockpiles.

The US has been negotiating with the Russians on to reduce their stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction. This resulted to the two nuclear powers signing the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty in 2010 that aims to reduce the two countries strategic forces to 1550 deployed warheads and 700 strategic missiles and bombers (Woolf 2017). The US has sought negotiations to lower the limits set by the New START to bring down the number nonstrategic nuclear weapons and reserved strategic warhead.

United States leadership is crucial in reduction of the weapon of mass destruction by demonstrating to the Russians that they are willing to reduce their own stockpile (Kort 2013). The US has advocate for the use of conventional weapons and forces to Russia to ensure that the weapon of mass destruction can be reduced (Prestowitz 2003). The use of the weapons between the US and Russia has been prevented through the nuclear deterrence where each country is not willing to use nuclear weapons first.

In its aim lead in reduction of weapons of mass destruction, the US in 2013 proposed and executive agreement on missile defenses transparency. The agreement requires the United States and Russia to exchange notifications that provide the number of major missile defense elements such as the radars, missile launchers and interceptors annually (Woolf 2017). The agreement by the United States was aimed ensuring each country had sufficient information on whether there will be future threats to a country’s strategic ballistic missiles.

The US willingness and leadership in negotiating with Russia on the reduction of weapons of mass destruction is crucial in ensuring the global threat posed by these weapons is gradually reduced (Nye Jr 2017). This is due the fact that two countries possess the largest number of nuclear weapons. An agreement between the United States and Russia to reduce the number of strategic weapons will also influence other nuclear powers such France, Britain and china to reduce their stockpiles.

US leadership as super power is crucial in ensuring that other non-nuclear power countries with ambition to develop weapons of mass destruction such as North Korea, Iran and Pakistan abolish their program (Kagan 1998). The US has played a key in persuading Iran to abolish it nuclear program through a series of negotiations and economic sanctions.

In 2015, US, UK, France, Russia and Germany reached an agreement with Iran to abolish it ambition of developing nuclear weapons in exchange to the lifting of sanctions that had placed by the US and other world powers (Nye Jr 2017). The diplomatic efforts lead by United States came to agreement with Iran that it was reduce it uranium enrichment by a third and abolish it underground nuclear facilities.

US leadership was the key to ensure this deal was reached and agreed. President Obama’s government issued waivers by suspending US economic and financial sanctions towards Iran (Adebahr 2017). US government was determined to reach deal to a level that president Barrack Obama promised to use his veto power on any domestic effort to that would undermine the deal. This act highlights the importance of United States of America leadership is crucial towards the efforts of reducing the threat of weapons of mass destruction. United States used both its economic and political power to strike the deal with Iran over abolishment of weapons of mass destruction.

In conclusion, American military, economic and political power is very crucial in addressing global security threats such terrorism and weapon of mass destruction. It vast military can deal with any threat around the globe and their economy is big enough to fund overseas operations year in year out. American political system also support democracy and protection of human rights. It advocate for global peace and security for all people and nations.
