As a student, Bracey was active in the civil rights movement in Chicago. After graduation, he worked as a lecturer and researcher. He served as a member of the NAACP and was a teacher there. He also served as an advisor to the organization and has been a life member of the Organization of American Historians.Bracey's book explores the consequences of racism on the United States, from slavery to the war for independence. He examines how segregation impeded the development of labor unions in the United States, and how business owners exploited this segregation by exploiting the low-wage, non-unionized labor of African Americans.
